A Tale of Two Schools

Last night, MHW and I attended teachers' conferences for OYD, a freshman at a very good high school. The lines were endless, the waits uncomfortable. In all, we saw 8 teachers in two hours.

Tonight, we have conferences for OYS at a different school. This school instituted a computer system through which you register in advance. You pick the teachers you want to see and the time slots that work for you. You receive an immediate confirmation of your schedule by return email.

Tonight we will see 5 teachers in about 30 minutes.

I was my normal patient self last night, muttering under my breath and saying things like "pre-historic" and "arcane". I did my best to rile up as many parents as possible. I'm hopeful that a popular revolution will ensue thereby ensuring that we don't have to wait on lines by this time next year.

Report back after tonight's experience. I've found that even in schools that give appointments things always get screwed up, usually b/c of parents who can't stop talking about their little darling and overstay their apptmt.

No, in this system, there is a built in incentive to shut up. If you don't stop when the bell rings, you risk missing your next appointment. If you miss your appointment, you are out of luck.

I have already done the computer system a number of times. It works like a charm.

Ah, but if a parent were to schedule an empty space between each appointment, that incentive would disappear. In my kids' school they have appointments, but you don't lose your place if you're late, which of course screws theings up for everyone else. But if yours works, great!

my school's system works like your OYS's school's system, except it's arranged by hand, not computer.

the school uses a software/web system called virtual paragon: http://www.virtualparagon.com/

works very well, since it is combined with the school bell ringing at the end of each appointment time.

I'm glad our Virtual Paragon Parent/Teacher Conference Reservation software worked out so well for you and your school! Thanks for blogging about your success story and Virtual Paragon.

We've been fortunate to hear from so many thrilled school staff members and parents just like you who tell us how we have helped transition this process from a chaotic nightmare to a true pleasure for parents and staff alike. We view it as a testament to how easy our product is to use, and how customizable it is for each school's conference needs.

Of course, it's always a pleasure to hear once again how well it works! Thanks, and keep spreading the good word!!

I used some great software for scheduling parent-teacher conferences this last year, and it was so much easier than trying to do it the old fashioned way.
