"Red" Heads

Why do they call redheads redheads when their hair is actually orange?

Curious minds want to know.

    Because "orange" doesn't rhyme with "head"...or anything else for that matter.

    While you're at it, why do we call black people "black" when they are really various shades of brown. And why do we call white people "white" when they are really something between transparent (me) to pink/beige. And what the heck is brunette and blonde? Why wasn't "brown" and "yellow" sufficient?
