Why Elmo?
The Toddler is infatuated with Elmo. And she doesn't even watch any TV! Someone got her an Elmo doll and she took to it right away. Once, I was looking for an Elmo DVD on the computer and TT saw an image of Elmo. Now, everytime any of us gets on the computer when she's around, she makes us go to You Tube and put on a snippet of Elmo.
What's up?
When did Elmo surpass Burt and Ernie and even Grover as the main man? Where was I when this happened?

Because Elmo was designed to look and act like 4 and under. He appeals to them because he is like them. Look at the language Elmo uses and how he forms sentence structure. Elmo's concerns are the same concerns most of the 4 and under set. He even has that high pitched voice...

I didn't realize there was Rashi and Tosfos to the whole "Elmo Question".

My son doesn't watch Sesame Street either, but has books and just loves Elmo (Big Bird too). Who wouldn't love such a cute, cuddly character? He also loves Clifford and Arthur.
I'm sure that when he goes to a Yeshiva interview if we put him into the more RW school as it is on our radar, that he will be pegged as a TV watcher, when he is really a book reader. Oh well. :)

SL, yes, but they probably ban Sesame Street books too! :-)

I asked my babysitter that very question when my oldest suddenly, out of nowhere, identified Elmo on the sticker he got at the pediatrician's. "He's never seen Sesame Street," I wailed. "He's never even watched a video. We don't have a single Elmo tape, doll, or toy. How does he know from Elmo?"
"They all know," she answered darkly. "They know through baby osmosis."

my son is totally obsessed with elmo. (16 months) he'll wake up in the morning and just sit in his crib saying "elmo." i think kids like him b/c he looks and acts like a little kid. also he is different looking like everyone else- that's what kids focus on.
